Approach
The Commission has developed a Draft Approach for the 2029 State of the Environment (SoE) Report, which builds on the 2024 SoE Report and the Commission's Review of State of the Environment Reporting in Tasmania (September 2025) (PDF, 1.9 MB).
The draft approach specifically addresses four broad opportunities for improvement identified in the review:
- Engagement with Tasmanian Aboriginal people
- Continuity and sufficient time
- Flexibility and responsiveness
- Value, efficiency and reducing the burden on reporting partners
The draft approach underwent targeted stakeholder consultation in 2026. The version released for consultation is published below as a record of the project’s development and remains subject to refinement.

What’s next
The draft approach will inform the development of a broader SoE framework including the information, assessment, governance, quality assurance, partnership, and reporting arrangements required for SoE reporting. Framework development will also include the identification and selection of core environmental themes.
The Commission will continue to identify opportunities for stakeholder participation.
