Background

State of the Environment (SoE) reporting in Tasmania was initiated in 1993, with SoE Reports produced by the Commission in 1997, 2003, 2009 and 2024.

Legislative Framework

SoE reporting in Tasmania is a requirement under the State Policies and Projects Act 1993.

Section 29 of the Act requires the Commission to produce a consolidated SoE Report every five years that includes:

  • recommendations for future action in relation to management of the environment
  • the achievement of resource management objectives
  • conditions, trends and changes in the environment

The Commission must submit the SoE Report to the Minister. After receiving the SoE Report, the Minister must table it within the first 15 sitting days of each House of Parliament. Once tabled in parliament, the SoE Report is made available to the public.
