The Commission has been progressing work on the 2029 State of the Environment (SoE) Report. This work has involved development of a draft Approach for the preparation of the 2029 SoE Report as well as project planning. This builds on the 2024 SoE Report and a subsequent review undertaken by the Commission to identify lessons and opportunities for improvement in SoE reporting.

The Commission undertook targeted consultation on the draft Approach with government agencies, regional natural resource management organisations, utilities, environmental organisations and scientific bodies.

While stakeholders identified areas where further detail would be beneficial, there was broad support for the draft Approach and the objectives of improving continuity, efficiency, transparency and collaboration in future SoE reporting.

The draft Approach provides a foundation for developing a broader framework to support ongoing SoE reporting. The framework will establish the information, assessment, governance, quality assurance, partnership, and reporting arrangements required to underpin SoE reporting. Framework development will also include the identification and selection of core environmental themes.

The Commission acknowledges and thanks all organisations and individuals who participated in the targeted consultation on the draft Approach. Their feedback has helped inform the next stage of work.

The Commission will continue to identify opportunities for stakeholder participation as development of the framework progresses.
