The Commission has completed a review of State of the Environment (SoE) reporting in Tasmania, and this is now available on the Commission’s website.

The main objective of the review was to inform an approach for the 2029 SoE Report based on the learnings and insights gained during the preparation of the 2024 SoE Report. This included a literature review and feedback received from reporting partners, contributing authors, stakeholders, Commission staff, and members of the public during the 2024 SoE reporting cycle as well as previous SoE reporting cycles, where available.

The key findings in the review identify four priority areas for improvement:

  • Aboriginal engagement – to strengthen collaboration with Tasmanian Aboriginal people through established frameworks and open dialogue
  • Continuity and efficiency – to shift to ongoing reporting to support long-term partnerships, reduce disruption, and build practitioner capacity
  • Flexibility and responsiveness – to apply the UNEP Integrated Environmental Assessment approach to adapt to change, take on more internal analysis, and engage expert panels while commissioning targeted investigations as needed
  • Monitoring impact – to track implementation of the 2024 SoE Report recommendations to assess reporting effectiveness

The approach for the 2029 SoE Report will also aim to be flexible enough to accommodate a range of information, analytical approaches, technological change and cultural perspectives that can also deliver credible, salient and legitimate recommendations across the range of SoE themes and topics.

The Commission has commenced work on developing an approach for the next SoE report due in August 2029.
