Gunns Limited is proposing to develop and operate a bleached kraft pulp mill in northern Tasmania. On 24 February 2005 Gunns announced that Long Reach, on the Tamar River (near George Town) is its preferred site for a pulp mill. Output of the mill would be in the range of 500,000 to 1,300,000 air dried tonnes of pulp per annum.
Gunns has prepared a Revised Project Scope (PDF 1.98mb/12pgs), which provides a broad description of the project proposal.
NOTE:
The Commission is an independent statutory body that is responsible, under the State Policies and Projects Act 1993, for carrying out integrated assessments of projects of State significance. Government agencies, including the Pulp Mill Task Force, have no connection with the Commission or its assessment process.
It has come to the Commission's attention that statements have been made in the public domain that the Commission has done work under contract to the Pulp Mill Task Force and that a Commission document was stamped with an approval of the Pulp Mill Task Force. Those statements are incorrect.
The document referred to is the Recommended environmental emission limit guidelines for any new bleached eucalypt kraft pulp mill in Tasmania produced by the RPDC in August 2004. The "approved stamp" on the document states "Approved - Tasmanian Government - October 2004". The process which resulted in those guidelines is described elsewhere on this website.
