Oceanport Hobart

On 20 November 1997, both Houses of Parliament approved the Governor’s Order declaring Oceanport Hobart Pty Ltd’s proposal to develop and operate an international cruise liner complex at Princes Wharf a project of State significance.

The (then) Sustainable Development Advisory Council was required to carry out an Integrated Assessment of the Project as required under the State Policies And Projects Act (1993) of Tasmania.

After 1 January 1998, the assessment of the Oceanport project continued under the new Resource Planning and Development Commission.

The Integrated Assessment required Oceanport Hobart to prepare:

  • an Integrated Impact Statement (IIS) addressing environmental, social, economic and community impacts relevant to the Project.

Draft Guidelines for the IIS were prepared by the (then) Sustainable Development Advisory Council with the assistance of an independent adviser. The draft Guidelines sought to identify the issues Oceanport Hobart were required to address in the IIS.

Final Guidelines (PDF: 211KB | 60 pages) were provided to the proponent to assist in the preparation of the IIS. The Proponent was required to prepare the IIS in accordance with these guidelines.

The RPDC submitted a Report to the Premier on 23 February 1999 recommending that the project not proceed.
