The Tasmanian and Australian Governments agreed to prepare a Regional Forest Agreement (RFA) for Tasmania by 30 June 1997. The RFA is designed to provide for long-term, ecologically sustainable forest management of forests and the development of competitive and efficient forest industries.
The then Tasmanian Public Land Use Commission (now known as the Tasmanian Planning Commission) was the primary vehicle for public consultation for the RFA process.
Tasmania's RFA covers the entire State. The Tasmanian and Australian Governments signed the RFA on 8 November 1997.
The RFA increased the existing conservation reserve system by almost one fifth. It brought the total reserve system to 2.7 million hectares, nearly half Tasmania's land area. As a result, more than two thirds of the State's public land is in reserves. The RFA established a program to protect conservation values on private land.

The Tasmanian Regional Forest Agreement (8 November 1997) is available as a pdf, word document and html format.
A variation to the Tasmanian RFA was signed on 19 July 2001 by the Tasmanian and Australian Governments.
