Assessment of draft planning schemes

Commission’s role in draft Planning Schemes

Certification

When a planning authority has prepared a draft planning scheme it must forward the document to the Commission for examination.

The Commission can;

  • certify that the document is suitable for public exhibition,
  • decide that it is not suitable for exhibition and direct the planning authority to revise it.

Conduct of Public Hearings

After a planning authority has reported on representations received during the public exhibition period, the Commission conducts hearings into each of the representations.

Following the hearings the Commission may;

  • require modifications to the scheme,
  • direct that a part be done again, or
  • reject the scheme and direct that it be done again.

Approval of draft planning schemes

At the completion of the public process and after the necessary changes have been made, the Commission approves a draft scheme and gives a date for its commencement.
