Formation of the Commission
The Tasmanian Planning Commission Act 1997 established the Tasmanian Planning Commission (“the Commission”) as a statutory body.
From 1 September 2009 the Commission assumed the functions of the Resource Planning and Development Commission and the Land Use Planning Branch of the Department of Justice.

Functions of the Commission
The Commission has the following principal functions:
- to assess and approve local government planning schemes and planning scheme amendments;
- to assess projects of State Significance;
- to assess Draft State Policies;
- to prepare the Tasmanian State of the Environment report;
- to conduct inquiries into the use of public land;
- to review the representations and the report of the Secretary of the Department of Primary Industries and Water relating to draft water management plans; and
- to consider the draft development plan and any representations, statements and recommendations contained in a report of the Sullivans Cove Waterfront Authority
- to provide advice and support to the Minister in relation to the performance of this or her functions, and the exercise of his or her powers, in relation to land use planning under this or any other Act;
- to provide advice to the Minister in respect of matters related to land use planning;
- to plan for the coordinated provision of transport, and of infrastructure, for land development;
- to provide advice to local government in relation to planning schemes under the Land Use Planning and Approvals Act 1993 and the functions of local government under that Act;
- to review, and advise the Minister in respect of, State and regional strategic land use planning matters.
Other Commission activities
The Commission has other roles in Government:
- membership of the Marine Farming Review Panel; and
- membership of the Nomenclature Board.
The Executive Commissioner also has responsibility for:
- the conduct of Appeals under the Aboriginal Lands Act 1995;
- chairing the Environment Protection Policy Review Panel in accordance with the Environmental Management and Pollution Control Act 1994.
